So what? That ATR Captain has probably done 5 years of service with the company give or take and their number is coming up. They've also elected to
not leave and work for another airline in this time, when they will have had the option to do so. Meanwhile your experienced jet pilot has been off providing their services to another airline. I don't have an issue with an internal candidate receiving priority in this way.
If an experienced jet pilot really wants to fly for Air NZ, jump on a turboprop for them. They'll get a quick command, be able to live almost wherever they like within NZ, and will be on a pretty good contract/lifestyle to boot.
