Rather than attempting to undermine FlyBe, those who are involved in UK domestic flying with other carriers should jointly lobby HMG with proposals to revive the sector for the benefit of all.

I would propose:

1) APD should be levied only once on a domestic return ticket (as happens with flights to/ from the Continent).
2) APD should be levied at a lower rate for domestic flights than for international.
3) EU261 compensation should be capped at 100% of ticket-price for domestic flights.

Or, better still, lobby to abolish APD altogether.

I would suggest that crippling levels of APD and excessive EU261 liabilities are key factors negatively impacting sustainable provision of domestic air travel in the UK. Without reform, we will soon be left with just slot-restricted London to Scotland / NI trunk routes and afew expensive PSO's. Don't hold your breath for a major expansion of domestic flying by Ryanair and EasyJet if the need arises to backfill FlyBe's network. Both have far more lucrative priorities to pursue with their valuable assets.
