Turning back with a plan suddenly altered by an ATC refusing the runway requested causing immediate action? We actually do know the answer to this if you listen to the ATC tapes. They asked for 25R because it was the longest. Approach tried to get them to 24R and they said no -- at which point ATC agreed and they went to 25R. And all that happened in about thirty seconds while they were at 8000 feet.
