I do believe easyjet had a base at Manchester before Jet2 showed up so it's in their best interest to protect their turf. If you read the easyjet mission statement in their annual reports you'll see that they want to be the number 1 or number 2 airline in any operating base and I think they rather missed the boat when monarch disappeared, most likely to do with establishing their TXL base and running that into profitability being a priority.
