I note that the Sellafield nuclear facility and the BAE Submarine facility are located on the Cambrian coast, both about 1.5 - 2 hours drive from the airport.
It was a pity that in the early 1960s when the new Carlisle Airport (Kingstown was an existing grass airfield) was chosen at Crosby-on- Eden that GREAT ORTON ( 10nm W of Crosby ) was not selected instead.
Situated west of the City, better approaches with no higher ground in the vicinity & serving west Cumbria as well. Less well developed was probably the reason for the decision?
It fate was well & truly sealed in 2001 when it was the burial ground following a major foot & mouth outbreak. Followed by a wind farm installed!
