The prevailing corporate culture sent how many flights down to the ice and came back with no problem? bending the rules without doubt, but not impacting terra firma As has been stated many times in this thread, if you want to bend the rules make sure you are fireproof and not bend the rules of common sense.
That has to be the most extraordinary piece of advice ever given on Pprune, it's OK to not comply with SOP's, you for real? Chippendale acknowledges that the accident flight was in VMC until the last, they had made their descent as did all the others, in VMC (supposedly) in contravention of the SOP's to make the descent in the proscribed sector. Failure to comply with SOP's is what caused the accident.
The general public, and this includes some in this forum, do not seem to realise that the Captain and crew had all the means at their disposal to correct this so called error, and they used none of them, which to professional aviators beggars belief.
In hindsight they could have, Chippendale notes that all the previous crews who had flights to the erroneous waypoint never plotted it and didn't know its location, it wasn't until Capt. Simpson on the penultimate flight discovered the error, and he hadn't plotted it either. In your books then it's assumed none of them were professional aviators.
