There used to be a railway line spur running from the main railway line near Newbury into Welford but I think it's been closed now; it's most intensive use was apparentlyduring the Viet Nam war.
Greenham Cruise Missile deployments may have occured here; there was a domestic site here in the late '70s/early '80s, but the only deployments I knew about were at a certain British army camp near RAF Oakhanger occuring every 2 or 3 months.
As to Jenkins challenge at #17869, I would guess one of the USAF bases in France vacated when De Gaulle chucked the USAF out.
