Otto Lilienthal used the hill for some of his early (1894) experiments. If you want to see some impressive flying try googling the video of the landing there of an IL-62 in about 1989. The strip is about 900m grass and he raises a fair bit of dust, but a great bit of flying. The capain has the look of a 1970s porn star.
The IL-62 is still there by the way, getting in is one thing...
