I saw a video of a simulator training session in a 737, which included a stabilizer trim runaway, and those pilots didn't extend the trim wheel handles either.
According to the video, there was no need for the handles : runaway caught within seconds, limited out of trim, and obviously easy to turn wheels.
Whether this simulation is representative of a real life runaway is speculative.
