The standard in aviation is "Would I put my family on board ?" I first learnt this over thirty years ago when when the examiner who ticked the box for my Private Pilots Licence told me. It's still used today and unlikely to ever change, from the Chief Pilot who gives someone his first command on an airliner to the engineer who signs out a single engine trainer.
