Wartime thinking, according to a WW2 pilot (gliding instructor amongst other things) who I knew was that if you had a common intersection for all 3 runways, the enemy could bomb that intersection and knock out all 3 or them, hence it only occured very rarely.
Sorry I forgot, it's Hampstead Norris (aka Norreys) and OH. Out of shot to the left is the Compton VOR (CPT), the flat bit of green on the left is I believe a private airstrip; I've flown over it many times.
