As they were busy, I was given an unexpected request to go via a waypoint which took me a while to factor in to my route.

I am inferring from your comment, that you took some time reprogramming your navigational device. If I was presented with a request to fly to an unexpected waypoint, I would tell the controller that I'm unfamiliar with the waypoint and request vectors.
