It is an historical quirk that RN officers NEVER retire - they are placed on the Retired List and are theoretically available for service until the Grim Reaper comes knocking.
Same for RAF and Army officers. This is why officers who retire on Armed Forces Pension Scheme '75 terms are not awarded a pension. This historical quirk leaves officers with the snappily titled 'Service Retired Rate Of Pay'.
