I've seen 2 methods to this.

1. Altitude to lose in thousands x 3 = TOD

Need to lose 10,000ft, so 10x3 =30nm

2. Altitude to lose in FL ÷ 3 = TOD

Need to lose 10,000ft, so 100 ÷ 3 =33nm

The first method obviously produces a steeper descent.
