I think leaving it in managed works okay & is safe....buuuut any pilot who is actively monitoring their aircraft can see that the 320/321 when heavy climbs with the AP on in a relatively poor manner above FL300. Which can be done better by a competent pilot actively flying the aircraft through the use of other modes. Note competent and actively flying.
On the other hand leaving it in managed and porpoise-ing up to cruise gets you there eventually too.
