When it first opened in 1965, EGNX operated a very busy IFR/VFR mix for about 8 years before they acquired a 'Special Rules Zone'. They had crossing R/Ws too, with the grass strip 01/19. It got very complicated at times, with lots of circuit traffic and transits nearby, via Lichfield and the 'CA' NDB, 4 miles to the east. Great respect to the ladies and gentlemen who did it.
