Just started to explore the Cathay cadet program, and i am interested in both CX and KA.
On the website, it says application is open year-round, but seems like KA still has the option to choose for cadet, but CX does not (only have second officer, first officer, and simulator instructor).
Is choosing second officer in CX is equivalent to applying for the cadet program?

Yes simply choose Second Officer would do for CX.
