USNS Card transporting F-102As. As SLB says, the only carrier sunk by enemy action after WWII - admittedly in only 6 m of water, so it was reflected and repaired.

It was sunk at the Saigon wharf shown below, by limpet mines attached by a VC saboteur:

The picture shows the Card's sister-ship, USNS Core, at the wharf at the foot of Tự Do* (now Đồng Khởi) street in central Saigon. The Majestic Hotel is in the background.

Here's the Card after the attack, listing to starboard:


A 12' wide hole was blown in the hull. Five civilian crew members were killed in the attack.

* Tự Do street's original name was Rue Catinat during French colonial times. It features prominently in The Quiet American. Tự Do, which means freedom or liberty in Vietnamese, was renamed Đồng Khởi after the fall of Saigon in 1975. This lead to a joke among Saigonese that when the NVA arrived, they took away freedom and liberty!
