An Italian ex-fighter jet fighter pilot, and his French counterpart have had a miraculous escape when their military trainer aircraft crash landed in a paddock on the Fleurieu Peninsula after engine failure.

The pair were making their final approach into Goolwa Airport when the Aermacchi S-211 turbo-fan powered military trainer suddenly lost power just after midday.

The quick thinking pilot managed to crash land the plane in a paddock near Kessell Rd at Goolwa — narrowly avoiding irrigation equipment.

It landed and slid but incredibly both the pilot and his passenger escaped the bumpy landing uninjured.
