If it's a long term, chronic shortage of staff and not some short term blip due to sickness or hours, they'll need to start looking at adjusting their forward schedule, surely? There again, if it is a structural shortage of crews, why didn't they see this coming.

Oh yes they did!
This is the result of pilots handing in their notice left, right and centre for the last year. Poor management and lack of communication to the crews has resulted in this situation. Everyone has been kept in the dark knowing cuts would be around the corner.
Surely they can't be surprised all the pilots are finding alternative employment? However It would seem they have been caught with their trousers down.
