Across the rear seats. You can pile a bunch of stuff back there, although if AC is installed it can be a little tricky because of the way the AC unit protrudes. And I suspect really big bags won't fit. Also lots of room under both rear seats for medium duffle bags or the like. The 44 is a good travelling machine for two people.
