The FAAs mission, copied from their website
"Our continuing mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world."
I would suggest there would be a lot of tension between SAFEST and MOST EFFICIENT.
I also thought the FAA had as part of their remit to promote commercial aviation but can't find a reference.
