I can only assume that this response was sarcasm, to which I chuckled a little (but only a little). If not, then yes Don's response was irresponsible.
This answer is simple: if you come to EK, it would be wise to NOT bring or invite your gay family members, especially since there's a child involved.
As Laker said, it's vague if the penalty is death, which means it could be. So don't.
