Very sad news. I knew of Fred for years before I met him, but did know him for most of the '70s. I had the privilege of working for him in a staff post at Upavon - he was my last RAF boss. He was very understanding; I was aiming to leave and go civil flying, and he would allow me to go away to fly anything as long as my work was up to date.
