I was there

I was stationed with the USAF at RAF Mildenhall in 1969 when that incident happened. When I reported to work that day, our NCOIC told us with a grave expression that a mechanic had stolen and flown out a C-130 earlier that morning. After Sgt. Meyer started taxiing the aircraft without permission, the Mildenhall control tower got suspicious and alerted Air Police. By the time the APs reached the runway, Meyer took off just ahead of them. It would be important to substantiate eyewitness statements of the crash, to discount rumors that Meyer's plane was shot down either by a USAF F-100 (an F-100 wing was stationed nearby at RAF Lakenheath) or a British plane. An examination of the type of damage in the wreckage could indicate if the C-130 was downed by an air-to-air missile.
