Is there a possibility of slats extending beyond the maximum position with this type of fault?
No.
It is the naming of slats and flaps positions which can cause confusion. Slats>3 is the normal slat position when the Flap handle is at Full.
5 Flap positions labeled 0 to 4:
4 Slat positions labeled with respect to the flap handle position (doh!)
