Looking into this site I was interested to see that a lady sharing my surname - Stanton - was a prominent early abolishinist, and a little digging revealed that her husband, of a similar persuasion, was quite an eminent politician, and instrumental in the founding of the Republican party.

As they say you learn something every day - I always have assumed that some of our ancestors made the trip across the pond, but I had no idea of the existance of these people. So far we have only researched back a little way into our family history so can't claim to be related, and ours is not an uncommon surname anyway, but maybe I could allow myself to feel just a little bit proud!
