Maybe it wasnít rain? Perhaps sudden engine intake icing, followed by the activation of the deice boots lead to ice ingestion. Wouldnít be the first time thatís happened to a turbo prop (didnít it happen at a freight company a couple of years ago, a double flame out at altitude, who also did a good job at keeping it quiet?).
