For the last year I have been volunteering at our local monthly Repair Cafe. Folks arrive with all kinds of things to be fixed and it is really satisfying to get something working that would otherwise end up in landfill. There are about 12 of us with a variety of skills, some like me with general engineering/mechanical and electrical experience, some who are experts in things wooden and some who can look at a piece of electronic circuitry and make that work. You never know what is going to come through the door. There is also a cafe area providing drinks and cake. The movement began in the Netherlands as an antidote to the throwaway culture and is now worldwide
