This sounds somewhat similar to a very recent event involving a C-17. The C-17 was testing a new air drop platform and during the run-in to the dropzone the platform with HMMWV aboard was released over a local civilian neighborhood in North Carolina. No injuries and no damage other than to someone's ego and maybe their career.
