From what I heard from our mechanic the other day: Pins were originally stowed away in cockpit, non critical tire change needed so a pin taken and installed. This wasn’t logged in the AML. Not enough time, so tire change cancelled, gear pin was left in. The usage of gear pin was transparent to the operating crew.
