Unhappy XP Shutdown (again)

I was having a struggle getting XP to shutdown within a reasonable amount of time. I had searched around a bit and found some web sites dedicated to this problem, but none of the solutions appeared to work.

Then after a while I discovered (as you do with these niggles), that the shutdown problems only occur if I have left a CD in the drive.

Eperimented a bit and it seems a normal shutdown takes about 35 secs, but if I forget to take the CD out it takes 4mins 38 secs every time. It does'nt seem to make any difference which CD is in the drive or whether the drive is used or not.

The solution is obvious (take the CD out), but its becoming a bit of a pain if I finish work late at night, forget, and then have to wait nearly 5 mins before I can crawl into my pit.

Anybody got any idea's?

AMD3000+ 512MB, 160GB
A7N8X2.0
ATAPI CD RWX52
SONY DVD RW

Nero 5 is installed, but disabled for startup (enabling nero check does'nt help).
