In fact I think BMI having the PSO is a shambles, and would prefer an airline who could a) avoid the issues they had with multiple cancellations earlier in the year, and b) not charge sometimes well north of £200 rtn to one of the worst airports in Europe (STN).
The point of that type of PSO is to guarantee that an air service is available, not that people can literally fly for free. We are not exactly looking at a remote island airport where the air service is the only means to reach the outside world.
