EASA do not have any technical staff to answer such questions and it is not their job to do so. There is nothing in the regulation to say that you cannot revalidate an IR without having an associated Class or Type rating, they are seperate ratings however; it is up to the NAA to interpret the regulation as they see fit. In the UK you would not be going to the NAA to have the licence reissued for a revalidation, the Examiner would sign for the Prof Check conducted which in the case of the IR would be just that rating.
