Environmental factors, e.g windshear, turbulence, icing can increase the angle of attack beyond the stall very rapidly. Even Airbus state that their aircraft can be stalled in normal law by this.
Sure! The protection limits AoA to alpha max only to pilot input. but environmental factors can and when that happens the computer uses the flight controls to lower the AOA back to the permissible alpha max without pilot intervention which doesn't happen in nonprotected aircraft. So even here the protection helps. Even many airbus pilots have not given a thought to this.
