That woud probably have been in an A319 which doesn’t require the same reserves and diversion fuel as an A321.
Basic fuel planning requires landing with final reserve (30mins) and diversion fuel.
It is quite legal to commit to an airport and use the diversion fuel but you must try and land with fina reserves. If it looks as though you are going to land with less than final reserves then a Mayday is called
