It is not obvious in my second photo, but there is a very prominent mountain sticking up above the clouds in the centre of the image. Here's a closer view:

I'm sorry to hear that your "fairly thoughtful" post disappeared. I would have liked to have read your observations, particularly about "the general retain"!
For your benefit, here are some geological clues. The prominent peak has rocks of Lower Cambrian age.The ridge in the middle distance has Late Proterozoic rocks which contain Ediacaran fossil assemblages.
