I was looking out of my office window one weekend afternoon in the late 80s,with the tech Highland 747 parked on the ramp outside the old terminal doing an engine run. Suddenly there was an enormous bang, a cloud of smoke and the engine cowling flew off, followed by the whine of uncontained turbine blades as they flew in all directions like shrapnel. Luckily nobody was hurt, or killed. "Highland Express regret to announce a delay.....!!"
I have always wondered why an aircraft with a suspect engine was allowed to do a high power engine run on the ramp outside the pax terminal instead of taking it to a remote stand.
