Why do you say that Virgin/Delta would have had to seek the help of arch rival BA to get Manchester passengers up from Heathrow or route them via a convoluted connection over Amsterdam or Paris not cheap when combined with delayed payments added the their costs.
No it seems sensible to me to operate the Manchester service and rebook the London bound passengers on later Delta or Virgin services whilst also rerouting any connections scheduled over London via Paris or Amsterdam surely.
When American or BA operated Manchester - JFK scrubbing Manchester section was easy with the shuttle picking up the loads and their combined dozen or so JFK-LHR evening departures and near hourly departures on the west bound LHR-JFK routing.
