Runway excursions during landing have been widely recognized as one of the highest operational risks in business aviation and are a major contributor to airplane accidents worldwide. In response, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. and Honeywell International Inc. have jointly developed a Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System (ROAAS).
This paper describes the audio and graphical indications along with the underlying performance computational principles developed for ROAAS. The strategy taken by the team was to minimize the impact on the flight deck from the standpoint of crew workload and training. Using this approach, requirements evolved based on data collected from system performance and structured, multi-pilot human factors evaluations conducted in a fixed-base simulator and in real-world flight testing. The result is a unique, intuitive, graphical display that provides real-time, contextualized, energy-based aircraft state awareness along with timely visual and audio alerts during approach, landing, and roll-out to aid flight-crew decision making to reduce the risk of a runway excursion.
