SWA pretty much wrote the book on being a Low Cost. True their 737 pay is now competitive with other US majors - but that's been as much the majors taking cuts since 2001. When she joined in 1993 they were paying considerably less than UA/DL etc. My assumption is she joined them more for lifestyle reasons than highest paycheck (stable roster and base, husband flies for them as well out of same base)
