Already several of the airfields in the Western Isles which receive regular services by Loganair are operated with AFIS not ATC. In the Orkneys the regular Islander services fly into airfields without even an A/G service, though this is day VFR only.
Carlisle have been providing METARs for a good few years. I suspect a modern technological solution may be found that obviates the need for a controller to go out and look in a white box to check the ambient temperature.
