It really needs a tower and should be controlled.
Having flown in there for the last decade in turboprops and jets, it can be risky and on busy weekends can get downright dangerous especially with everything from narrowbody jets to ultralights and helicopters in the mix.
Usually the smaller stuff is training / recreation and the radio comms aren’t always stellar. Atc will tell ya theres numerous VFR paints when leaving CTA but half the time they don’t respond to your inbound calls and then your workload goes up dramatically trying to contact everyone to work out their intentions etc.
Tcas has prevented numerous near-misses (and possible collisions?) but it shouldn’t have to come down to that. It’s 2018, we think as Aussies we’re at the tip of the sword in aviation but really we ain’t. Perhaps time to get with the program?
