A plumbing contractor is usually a plumber with a trade background, and is not a university trained business management graduate.
A farmer is usually skilled in production of crops or livestock, and is not a tax accountant or industrial relations lawyer.
And there was a time when these kinds of people were elected to parliaments.
Now parliaments are full of professional politicians (the States are infected by property developer spivs too) whose staff are mainly Uni graduates aspiring to a career as a politician. That’s why government is all about them. They don’t know what to do, other than bicker, bonk the staff and bank the allowances.
But that’s changing. The electorate is slowly working out the solution. I predict around 30% of the vote will go to non-major parties at the next federal election. The percentage has been increasing, inexorably, with each election.
