I seem to remember someone had a "home made ruler"
My flying instructor has cut the scale off an old chart, and taped it to the (non-business) end of a pencil which she carries on her kneeboard. Doesn't take up any more room than a standard pencil would - very neat idea if you feel the need to have some kind of accurate scale in flight.
