anyone hiring a club aircraft needs to carry his licence
...and at the very minimum a photo ID. Hopefully a responsible hirer will ensure the equipment and documents supplied with the aircraft meet the legalities, but of course it's up to the pilot to check. You're the one who will be ramp checked, not the hirer. Don't forget to also check the insurance, ARC, radio licence, maintenance review etc. If the hirer can't/won't show you all these, walk away.
Expect to have ALL your personal docs photocopied before departure by the hirer. If you go down with the ship, at least they'll be able to make an insurance claim. I prefer to copy the driver licence, it has an address on it, unlike passports.
