1. Yes. An ATX power supply sends a 5V current to the motherboard through pin 9 on the power connector. That current is for WOL (Wake-up On Lan) and power circuits. When the power button is pressed, the motherboard notifies the ATX power supply to turn on the full power. When you turn off your UPS you isolate your PC from the mains, remove the 5V supply and it reverts to the battery for any power it needs. I wouldn't worry about it, the battery should still last for the average life of the machine, and it's easily and cheapily replaced.

2. Probably because "i" has got it itself accepted into the user dictionary as a word during a previous spell check. Check the contents.
