Hey guys, just a simple question
Mostly in Germany, when we get in airspace, they command us to change Squawk and set 1000. What I ve been told is that, with this they see what we set MCP and they get all data like speed and altitude.

Can anyone tell me what they do with this?

it has nothing to do with MCP settings, they get that already from your mode S transponder before. The reason for 1000 is that it links your FlightID set in the FMS to your flight plan in the system, instead of correlating with the mode A code set before. So your previously assigned squawkcode is now available to be given to someone else.

It is the 24bit address not the flight ID.

It may also prevent your transponder from responding to some ground interrogations reducing Fruit.

No, it's the Flight ID (ACID in Mode S parlance) that's used to correlate the radar target with a flight plan (which would previously have been done via the Mode A squawk).

I only get to Europe once in a while but looking at this thread, I now remember getting the squawk 1000 code. Didn't think too much about it at the time except for the unusual number.

But now after reading this thread(and learning some stuff) I wonder....are there a bunch of aircraft in the same area with the same code of 1000 on their transponder?

Yes. As mentioned above the radar identification and tracking is done by Mode-S flight ID, not by squawk. If the squawk isn't used anyway it is better to relieve code-shortage on other routes by assigning the same standard squawk to those that don't need it anyway.
