Emirates A380 - Engine Change - EGLL

I hear the ugly bus needs a new engine at LHR.

The engines can't be tired already ?

The engine will shortly be on its way from DXB, courtesy of a B747-400F

Boeing 747-400F, nice.

But, assuming the engines are the standard RR Trent 900's. Isn't Rolls Royce (or whoever the manufacturer is) to blame? Therefore the ironics of the 747 joke isn't very ironic

Sorry for being a smart ass...

But realy, whats wrong with the engine? Maybe it was in a test

What are they worth each?

Wasn't meant to be ironic; (well not very )
Just spent a few hours helping set the flight up
Should be in LHR around 2100Z.

Er, no, EK's A380s are powered by GP7200s.

What on earth are you talking about ?

It could be any number of factors that require an engine change, Having actually changed several Trent 900's I can safely say none have been down to manufacturers issues.

Please keep uninformed speculation to a minimum

GP7200's are another matter.....

Thought the GP7200 couldn't fit in a 747F?

Why?

What has caused they engine to "fail".

Birdstrike or other FOD?

Operator error?

Incorrect maintenance?

Y'all beat me to it.

The Trent 900 will fit into a 747 freighter, it was a prime design criteria. It is a tight fit using a special stand that "rolls" the engine on it's side so the engine can drop down lower in the stand.

However this does not apply to the Engine Alliance GP 700 series Emirates use on their A380s. The engine has to be shipped as a separate core, separate fan case and a set of fan blades, plus all the tooling to build up the engine at a remote site. The only other option is to charter an AN124 or similar outsize cargo aircraft to allow the engine to be shipped complete.

Same applies to the GE90 engine on 777-200LR and -300ER.

They can fit...moved one down under a while back...anticipatory move for a company that flies more than 6 of the big ones

Emirates are sending a working party over to do the change. When I left this morning the plan was to do it in the cathedral if there was space, if not they will have to do it outside.

Wouldn't it be easier to do a 3-engine ferry flight back to DXB?

I'm not sure whether a 3-engine ferry is any easier, but I hear it is definitely on the cards!
