Channel 4. Not sure if it's a repeat or not. Susi Air.

because the Channel 4 program is about Susi Air pilots in Indonesia and is titled "Worst place to be a pilot"

this was in no way a dig at the airline - I have no knowledge or opinion on them.

I thought episode one was an excellent well balanced aviation programme which showed the high quality of several of the individuals involved with the flying.

So nice to have a programme that was not just a vehicle for a presenter.

Yes, quite a change from the usual Channel 4 hatchet job documentaries.

Mind you, I wouldn't want to have to travel in a single-engined job over the Papua terrain, even if it's a newish Pilatus Porter.

Yep, an engine failure means choosing the least uncomfortable place to crash...

I watched the first episode, and most of last nights one, and it is a pleasant change from the usual TV fare. I note that one of the pilots was having some misgivings about his intended progression to driving big jets - particularly when his father (an ex airline captain) joined him for one trip, and said he was considering coming out of retirement!

I enjoyed the first programme. However, yesterday's one seemed to be a repeat of what they'd already told us....how many times do I really need to hear that it's very dangerous and all these pilots want to go home to a commercial flying job? Maybe I didn't give it long enough and should give it another try next week. Any thoughts?

You are right about the re-run of content/themes from the first episode but this one also included some highlights of the rather cushy life the pilots have off duty. Company house, slaves, grub, pool etc.

Worst place where to be a pilot is a place where there are not airplanes, sky or where it is forbidden to fly or to be a pilot...

Sorry but it is necessary to have fun sometimes.

Not a bad watch, but very over hyped at times.

There's certainly a lot of journalistic licence been used in the making of the show. I would take a lot of what the narrator says with a grain of salt.

Mind you, I wouldn't want to have to travel in a single-engined job over the Papua terrain, even if it's a newish Pilatus Porter.
It's not a lot different (the hills may be higher and there's more of them in PNG) to many parts of New Zealand where single engine aircraft go every day.

Nowadays, it is (sadly) a SOP of TV that the risk must be hyped up. They HAVE to repeat that the following action could lead to DEATH and DISASTER and to repeat that every 3.5 minutes.

Dangling under a fully developed parachute
Dangling under an undeveloped parachute.

We'll asume for the little kiddies reading this that the parachute did fully develop just before the pilot landed in a farmer's field, where he met the farmer's daughter, they fell in love, got married and had many children, none of which grew up to be pilots.

A real happy ending.
